What Kind Of Money Can You Make As An Expedited Courier

  1. I have a cargo van and I'm looking for an expedite or courier company I can make decent money with. By "decent" I mean at least $300 a day gross. Would prefer local around the Chicago/Milwaukee area but would consider OTR too. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

  4. $300 a day in a van?

seriously I would think maybe half that.

  5. I had a courier van leased to a company in Elk Grove Village, I had it outfitted properly, wooden floor and side panels for easy loading of skids. I had two dedicated loads a day, one out of the house and one back home (worked from 6AM-4PM usually) and never came close to $300/day. You might luck out on a decent route with Chicago Messenger or Veterans Distribution, since they have route accounts, unsure of their value though.

I ended up selling my van after about 6 months. I did okay, but nothing too impressive. Maybe a few days over $300, but most were about $200-250, before any expenses. I had an E250 6 cylinder, normal length.

  6. Hi DrivertoBroker!
Check out the website http://www.expeditersonline.com/. It's is similar to TTR, but dedicated to expediting only. I drove for FDCC, and everybody I knew used this website to communicate. They have a driver forum, too. Here's the link: http://www.expeditersonline.com/forum/. There are several cargo van drivers who post regular updates about the availability of freight, length of hauls, and payment rates. They include, amongst others, OntarioVanMan, fastman_1, ntimevan, and Murrycroexp. I believe Murrycroexp is also a small fleet owner or dispatcher?

There are some serious changes occurring at some companies within the expediting world. For example, FedEx Custom Critical just changed their pay from percentage of load to flat rate only, and the the rate is very low. They also eliminated the driver's ability to negotiate an increase in the pay rate to account for other expenses, such as high tolls, a long deadhead, or the load landing them in a dead freight area. I don't think they pay relocation money anymore, either.
And, load acceptance rate is now being used to determine who gets a load, and who sits. That means that they can offer you a load at a rate that barely covers your expenses, and if you say "no" they put you at the bottom of the list for the next dispatch opportunity.

This business model is very similar to Panther's, FedEx Custom Critical's main competitor. As such, these changes are quickly trickling down to the rest of the expedite world. That's why I got out of expediting, and moved on to the oil fields. :yes2557:

  7. Murraycroexp is a 1 truck show who used to be in a management position at an expedite trucking company. Has some good connections on his on due to that. People think dry van truckload is competitive. Cakewalk compared to cargo vans. So little capital to startup and everyone plus their brother thinks they can do it.

  8. I noticed that Chicago Messenger and Veteran's are always trolling Craigslist for cargo van O/Os. I inquired to Veteran's once but didn't like how I had to pay something like $300 for a scanner to work for them.
  9. Yeah, they're definitely posting a ton on CL lately, but always have. Some of the vehicles I see on with them are one big pothole away from completely falling apart, so take that as you will.

The scanner? That's a new one to me. The guys I run into on occasion all are using Android smart phones they get their runs on and get signatures on. Sorta surprising if you needed a scanner they wouldn't rent one out til you paid it off - that's how I got this Nextel that's about as good as a...paperweight. If you're all set to go with everything, Ceva has a few vans running out of their facility in Elk Grove, might give that a shot?

  10. Were their initials WCG by any chance?
